ANWA Dramat, the country's new crime-busting supercop, is a relatively unknown former Robben Islander.

In a surprise announcement, Dramat was named yesterday as the boss of the country's new crime-fighting unit, the Directorate of Priority Crimes Investigation.

The unit will replacethe Directorate of Special Operations, known as the Scorpions.

Dramat, formerly the deputy provincial commissioner of the Western Cape police, was described by Police Minister Nathi Mthethwa as not being "a showman, but dedicated to fighting crime".

The little-known Dramat was lauded for his commitment to busting criminals in Cape Town.

Mthethwa said he had "expertise in crime intelligence and underground operative work within the serious and violent crime" scene.

"With backup knowledge of religious extremism, our new head has been at the centre of crime combating since his arrival within the police [in 1995]," said Mthethwa.
