Kavakami Gensai: The Lone Wolf

Kavakami Gensai was born in 1834 in Kumamoto, a city in the province of Higo (present-day Kumamoto Prefecture).

As the second son of a vassal in the Kumamoto domain, he was not destined to inherit his father's property. Instead, at the age of 10, Gensai was adopted into the Kawakami family to continue their lineage.

Schooling and Service

Gensai's education included basic literacy and swordsmanship at the Kumamoto han school.

However, his swordsmanship skills were unremarkable. At 15, he entered the service of the local daimyo, performing various duties including cleaning and escorting.
